It's Featured Structure Friday! Recently researchers have discovered how Chameleons manage their rapid colour changes see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-31819588 and http://dx.doi.org /10.1038/ncomms7368. The secret? It’s due to crystals of course! Specifically, the colour change comes from alterations to the packing arrangement of guanine nanocrystals in the animal’s pigment cells. We’ve chosen guanine CSD refcode KEMDOW http://dx.doi.org/10.5517/ccnrr04our featured structure; the picture showing the hydrogen-bonding network adopted in the crystal.
