Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.

Can your diet 'cure' cancer?

Anti-angiogenic foods might be able to prevent or fight cancer.

Everyone knows diet and health are related. What you eat can have an impact on everything from your heart to your waistline. But can your culinary choices potentially prevent or even cure cancer?
fruits and vegetables

The link between cancer and diet is a much-studied, mysterious one, say researchers. Many studies have pointed to foods that either seem to prevent or exacerbate cancer growth. But the research has been mostly inconclusive.
Studies have pointed to associations between certain foods and cancer, according to Harvard Health, not a cause-and-effect relationship.
"It's not 100 percent certain that consuming more or less of certain foods or nutrients will guarantee cancer protection," says Dr. Edward Giovannucci of Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health. "But science has found that certain dietary habits tend to have a greater influence."
According to the World Cancer Research Fund, about 40 percent of all cancer casesare preventable. Among other things, changes in diet, physical fitness, inactivity, body weight, and alcohol and cigarette consumption may all play a part.

Anti-angiogenic foods

When Kathy Mydlach-Bero was diagnosed with two late-stage rare cancers more than a dozen years ago, the Wisconsin woman tried conventional treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, but the cancer kept winning.
"My kidneys were failing; my liver was failing," Mydlach-Bero told WISN. "My lungs were damaged. My heart was damaged. I told my oncologist that I’m done with that protocol because one way or another, I’m going to die. And I don’t want to go that way."
A friend suggested she learn more about anti-angiogenic foods. These are foods that are believed to prevent the growth of harmful blood vessels that feed cancer and allow it to spread. They cover a range of fruits and vegetables, as well as plenty of herbs, nuts and some grass-fed meats and wild-caught seafood.
Mydlach-Bero says she combined her new diet with reiki energy healing, meditation and visualization. And it worked.
"My doctors just kept saying, 'Huh. That is interesting,'" she said.
Now she works as a cancer coach and speaker and tells WISN that researchers at Harvard Medical School are studying her history, as well as others who've had unusual cancer-fighting success.

The role of angiogenesis

Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels. Angiogenesis is key in the growth of cancers, according to the National Cancer Institute, because solid tumors depend on a blood supply to grow. Tumors can also emit chemical signals that stimulate angiogenesis. The new blood vessels that are formed end up feeding growing tumors, allowing them to enlarge and invade nearby tissue.
"But these blood vessels are also cancer's Achilles Heel. Cutting off a tumor’s blood supply starves it of oxygen and nutrients," according to the Eat to Beat Cancerwebsite, a global campaign offering information about the diet-cancer link.
Researchers have created medications called angiogenesis inhibitors, which block the angiogenesis process. These drugs work by preventing or slowing cancer growth by starving it of its blood supply.
The belief is that anti-angiogenic foods work in the same way.
Eat to Beat Cancer is an information hub supported by the Angiogenesis Foundation, a nonprofit focused on studying angiogenesis-based science to improve health.
That's Angiogenesis Foundation President Dr. William Li, above, discussing cancer-fighting foods in a TED Talk.
The group has identified more than 100 foods containing naturally occurring angiogenesis inhibitors. The foods listed offer details about scientific evidence, as well as recipes that highlight cancer-fighting ingredients.
"For each food type, we believe that there are different potencies within different strains and varietals," Li says in his TED Talk. "And we want to measure this because, well, while you're eating a strawberry or drinking tea, why not select the one that's most potent for preventing cancer?"

What is the Keystone virus?

If you weren't worried about
Zika and Lyme disease, here's another mosquito-borne illness to consider, just in time for summer hikes and backyard barbecues.closeup of a mosquito on someone's skin

A teenage boy in Florida has become the first person known to be infected with what is known as the Keystone virus, which is spread by mosquitoes.
The teen went to an urgent care clinic in August 2016 with symptoms including rash and fever. Doctors were concerned he might have an infection caused by the Zika virus but tests came back negative, according to a report on his case published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. Unexpectedly, researchers from the University of Florida (UF) found the Keystone virus when they studied viral cultures from the patient.
The virus was first discovered in the Tampa Bay area in 1964 and was named after the location where it was found. Researchers say it had previously been discovered in animals in coastal area from Texas to the Chesapeake Bay region. Researchers had suspected that the virus could infect people, but this is the first time they found proof.
"Although the virus has never previously been found in humans, the infection may actually be fairly common in North Florida," Dr. J. Glenn Morris, director of the UF Emerging Pathogens Institute and co-author of the report, said in a statement. "It’s one of these instances where if you don’t know to look for something, you don’t find it."
The teenager had relatively mild symptoms, but research suggests the Keystone virus can infect brain cells and may pose a risk for brain infections, similar to encephalitis.
Researchers say the discovery of the Keystone virus in humans shows the importance of more research into the prevalence of mosquito-borne diseases in the U.S.
"All sorts of viruses are being transmitted by mosquitoes, yet we don’t fully understand the rate of disease transmission," Morris said. "Additional research into the spread of vector-borne diseases will help us shine a light on the pathogens that are of greatest concern to both human and animal health.’"

8 fruits you think are vegetables

Botanists will tell you a tomato is a fruit, and many people already know that. But what many people don't know is that in the United States,
tomatoes are legally vegetables. In 1893, the Supreme Court ruled that a tomato should be classified as a vegetable "based on the ways in which it is used, and the popular perception to this end." If you're wondering why the Supreme Court was ruling on something like this, it had to do with taxes. Vegetables at the time were taxed, but fruits were not.Growing tomatoes is fine, but eating them raw? The Grumpy Gardener is not a fan.

There are other fruits that we consider vegetables, based on popular perception and the ways they're used. Here are several more that may surprise you.

Olives

closeup-olvies-on-branchOlives are a fruit because they come from the flower of the olive tree. (Photo: Tomo Jesenicnik/Shutterstock)
If you had asked me, I might have said olives were a vegetable, not a fruit. But olives are a fruit because they come from the flower of the olive tree. A fruit comes from the mature ovary of a plant and the ovary is found in the flower. That's why all of these vegetables are technically fruit — they grow from a flower.

Eggplant

eggplants on wooden tableEggplants are technically berries — really, really big ones. (Photo: Valentsova/Shutterstock)
We certainly treat eggplants like vegetables. I've never seen them eaten raw. They are savory — or sometimes a little bitter — not sweet. But not only are eggplants botanically fruits, they are considered berries. Very, very large berries. I don't see myself throwing one into a smoothie anytime soon, though.

Pumpkins and squash

Pumpkins and other types of squash, including zucchini, start out from a flower on a vine, and so they're technically fruits.

Cucumbers

CucumberCucumbers, like their squash cousins, are technically a fruit. (Photo: LedyX/Shutterstock)
Cucumbers are closely related to pumpkins and squash, and like their cousins, are technically fruit. When you see one hanging from the vine with the flower still attached at the end, it makes some sense, doesn't it?

Green beans

green beansMaybe if parents call green beans a fruit, kids will be more likely to eat them! (Photo: Mike Mozart/flickr)
Green beans certainly seem like vegetables, don't they? When a picky child doesn't want to eat green beans, what does mom or dad say? "Eat your vegetables." Maybe if green beans were called a fruit, which is technically accurate, the kid would be more inclined to eat them.

Okra

okraOkra — no matter which family you think it belongs to — has been gaining popularity for years. (Photo: Brent Hofaker/Shutterstock)
Okra's popularity has been growing in the past few years, and while it hasn't earned the status of an "it" vegetable yet like kale or cauliflower, it may still earn that moniker. If it does, you'll know it's really not an "it" vegetable. It's an "it" fruit.

Peppers

Habanero peppersHabanero peppers come in lovely shades. (Photo: Joshua Resnick/Shutterstock)
It really seems wrong that peppers are on this list, especially when you realize that something like a Habanero — a pepper that's 70 times hotter than a jalapeño — is technically a fruit. But whether the pepper is on the sweet side like a bell pepper or on the super spicy side like a Habanero, they are all derived from a flower and therefore are fruits.

Why do we call some fruits vegetables?

ratatouilleTechnically, this ratatouille is a savory, baked dish full of fruit. (Photo: Oksana Mizina/Shutterstock)
Why did all these fruits come to be known as vegetables? The best guess is that since they're not sweet because the natural sugars in them are low, people who cooked them put them in the vegetable category along with true vegetables that come from the leaves, stalks, roots, tubers and bulbs of a plant, or vegetables that are the flower of the plant, like broccoli.
But think about it. A dish like ratatouille made from tomato, eggplant and squash, botanically speaking, is just a baked fruit salad.

11 natural mosquito bite remedies

hough some mosquitoes can carry the West Nile virus or the now-infamous Zikavirus, most mosquito bites will do nothing more than cause an itch, which in itself can be absolutely maddening. Luckily, natural (and not so natural) mosquito bite remedies can provide itch relief so you can get back to enjoying the great outdoors this summer.
Image result for 11 natural mosquito bite remedies
1. Antihistamine cream. This is one of your best bets if you’ve suddenly found yourself the main course of a mosquito feast. When mosquitoes bite you (and siphon out your blood), your body sends histamines to the site of the bite because it doesn’t recognize the mosquito saliva. An over-the-counter antihistamine cream will help to soothe the itch. Make sure the active ingredient in your cream is dyphenhradamine to maximize effectiveness. Keep a stick or a tube handy when you’re spending a lot of time

outdoors.

If you’d prefer a more natural remedy, or just don’t have any cream, there are some household ingredients you can try.Related image
2. Ice or a cold compress. A sure-fire way to soothe a mosquito bite fast is to give it a chill pill. The cold sensation will help numb the itch and help relieve any swelling associated with the bite. Studieshave proved the cold can help reduce any histamine-related itch, so this might be helpful if you find yourself breaking out in hives from something else as well.
3. Toothpaste. According to the Farmer’sAlmanac, applying regular toothpaste to the bite site can help relieve the itch. This also can help reduce the pain of a fire ant bite (I’ve tried it – it works!). It might have something to do with the menthol in the toothpaste, which also creates a cooling sensation.
4. Baking soda and water. Make a paste with baking soda and water, apply it to the bite and leave for a few minutes before washing off. Baking soda and water make an alkaline solution, which neutralizes the pH of the skin to provide itch relief.
Rub some lemon or lime juice on mosquito bites to relieve the itch, but don't use this remedy if the would is open. Rub some lemon or lime juice on mosquito bites to relieve the itch, but don't use this remedy if the wound is open. (Photo: Blend images/Shutterstock)
5. Lemon and lime juice. These can help relieve the itch, but only try this remedy if you haven’t already scratched the bites. Applying citrus juice to open cuts will sting. Also, only use lemon and lime juice if you’re going to be indoors for a while. Applying these outside can lead to severe sunburns.
6. Vinegar. Another common household ingredient recommended by the almanac is vinegar. Vinegar’s antibacterial properties make it ideal for bug bites. Put a few drops on a cotton ball and wipe it on bites. If you have bites all over, pour a few cups in the bathtub with warm water and take a soak.
7. Essential oils. If you happen to have tea tree oil in the house, its natural antiseptic properties can help relieve the itch. Lavender oil also has healing benefits. Lavender comes from the Latin word lavare, which means to wash. A dab of lavender oil can help reduce swelling and relieve discomfort.
8. Honey. This golden goo has many health benefits. It can be used as a topical anti-bacterial ointment to keep bite wounds clean, and its anti-inflammatory properties will help lessen swelling.
Aloe vera is good for more than sunburns. A natural antiseptic agent, it relieves mosquito bites, too.Aloe vera is good for more than sunburns. A natural antiseptic agent, it relieves mosquito bites, too. (Photo: Piotr Marcinski/Shutterstock)
9. Aloe vera. If you have an aloe vera plant, cut a meaty portion of a leaf to extract the gel. You can apply the gel directly to the bite, or put it in the fridge for 10 minutes to cool before applying. Its natural antiseptic qualities will reduce swelling and itching.
10. Tea bags. You may know that you can put tea bags on your eyes to reduce puffiness. They work the same magic on mosquito bites. Take a cool, used tea bag and place it on the bite.
11. A slap. Another thing you can try in a pinch? A pinch! A pinch or a slap to the area will register as pain in your brain, and because your brain can only register one sensation at a time, it will take the place of the itch. Not the most pleasant remedy on the list, but it works!
Now that you know how to ditch the itch, find out why those little buggers causeyou to itch in the first place.

10 fruits you can grill

Grilled peaches topped with cheese and basil
The grill is for more than just choice cuts of meats. (Photo: Brent Hofacker/Shutterstock)
Maybe you’ve stuck a few pineapple chunks along with some chicken and bell peppers on a kebab skewer and stuck it on the grill before, but have you ever grilled fruit all by itself? When you grill fruit it evaporates some of the water in it, concentrating the sugars. And, the sugars on the surface of the fruit that touch the grill get caramelized, creating flecks of crunchy, sweet goodness.
Most fruits work well on the grill if they're coated lightly with a healthy oil so they don't stick and then cooked over indirect heat. Here are 10 recipes for fruits you can grill that should have you firing up the coals all summer and experimenting.
1. Watermelon. Watermelon is perfect with absolutely nothing done to it, but grilling it makes it a different fruit and it goes with savory foods. Try Grilled Watermelon and Feta Stacked Salad that’s topped with arugula and balsamic vinegar.
2. Peaches. It doesn’t get more simple or much more tasty than Grilled Peaches. Drizzled with a little oil, they are delicious on their own or topped with a little vanilla ice cream.
3. Nectarines. Stone fruits are wonderful on the grill. This recipe for Grilled Nectarines with Mascarpone makes a simple dessert that can be grilled on the coals after the main meal has been grilled.
Grilled bananas with walnutsGrilled bananas make for a delicious cookout treat. (Photo: stockcreations/Shutterstock)
4. Bananas. If you’ve ever had bananas cooked up for bananas Foster, you'll know how good warm bananas can be. Imagine how good they'll be caramelized on the grill. Try Honey Rum Grilled Bananas for a grown up grilled treat.
5. Cherries. Sour cherries will sweeten a bit on the grill, and somehow it just seems right that grilled cherries get used in a cocktail. A Grilled Cherry Sour made with gin sounds refreshing. I’d suggest you use a grilling basket for the cherries so they don’t fall through the grates.
6. Pineapple. Go beyond the kebab and let pineapple stand on its own as a grilled dish. Marry the sweetness of the pineapple with a little sour in a Grilled Pineapple with Lime Zest side dish.
7. Pears. Grilled fruit can be simple or it can be decadent. Try this decadent Grilled Pears filled with Hot Caramel and Chocolate Sauce recipe for a hot and gooey delight.

8. Grapefruit. Fire up your grill for breakfast and make Grilled Pink Grapefruit. It’s sprinkled with a little brown sugar that caramelizes and you can top it with fresh yogurt.
9. Mangoes. You’ll often see a mango salsa accompanying pork, so it makes sense that grilled pieces of the fruit would make a good side dish for pork. Grilled Jerk Pork Chops with Mango and Rum Sauce sounds like a guest-worthy dinner, doesn’t it?
10. Cantaloupe. Close out a meal with Grilled Cantaloupe accompanied by a honey-sweetened yogurt and sprinkled with berries and pistachios.
